Orland Township, in partnership with the Orland Fire Protection District, will offer a free CPR class for senior residents, according to the office of Orland Township Supervisor Paul O’Grady.

The class will be taught by certified instructors from the Orland Fire Protection District and will include CPR, AED and choking education. The class does not include a completion card.

“Orland Township is proud to partner with the Orland Fire Protection District to offer free CPR, AED and choking education training to our senior residents,” said Supervisor O’Grady. “I urge seniors to take advantage of the class – you may save someone’s life.”

In 2018, just a week after attending a CPR, AED and choking education class offered at Orland Township, resident Bill Weir put those skills to the test. He sprang into action, administering the Heimlich maneuver to a fellow bingo player who began choking during the Township’s senior drop-in. Weir’s quick action dislodged the food blocking the individual’s airway, and after being checked out by responding paramedics and refusing further treatment, allowed that individual to resume playing bingo.

CPR training for seniors is open to Orland Township residents 55 years of age and older. The class will be held on Thursday, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. at the Orland Township office, 14807 S. Ravinia Ave. There is no charge to attend the class, however, space is limited so registration is required. Please call Orland Township at (708) 403-4222 to register.
