Prairie School partners with CSHS Students on Jump Rope for Heart
High School leaders facilitate eight heart-healthy fitness stations to promote wellness among elementary students for charity.
Prairie School hosted their annual Jump Rope for Heart event on Thursday, February 24th. All of Prairie’s first, second and third grade students participated in the event, as well as several kindergarten classes. Overall, Prairie students and staff raised over $5,000 for the American Heart Association.
Approximately 65 Carl Sandburg High School students attended as part of their Junior Leaders program. The high school students led the first, second and third grade students through eight heart healthy fitness stations. Throughout the day, three kindergarten classes had the opportunity to perform Just Dance videos with the high school students.
Lauren Billo, physical education teacher at Prairie School, said, “This was Sandburg’s fifth year joining Prairie’s Jump Rope for Heart event. The elementary students are so lucky to connect with great role models from our community.”

Billo continued, “Every year the elementary students' faces light up when they enter the gym and see Sandburg’s volunteers, especially when they recognize a relative, neighbor or other familiar face. I love watching the students’ positive interactions and how the younger students try to impress the “teenagers” with their jump rope skills. Together we make a difference in our community by creating awareness, promoting a healthy lifestyle and donating to the American Heart Association.”
Prairie’s Jump Rope for Heart promotes activity and heart health at an early age, but it has also created a connection between the high school and elementary school students. It is a great opportunity for the high school students to serve as healthy role models for the younger students.
