Registered Sex Predator on the Lam After Orland Car Burglary: Sheriff

An arrest warrant was issued for a registered sex offender who was observed on video burglarizing a vehicle in unincorporated Orland Park early Monday morning, a Cook County Sheriff’s police officer said.

Brandon M. Oakes, 30, a convicted sex predator staying in Orland Park, is being sought on a burglary to auto charge.

According to the county police officer, Oakes and another person were seen driving through a neighborhood in unincorporated Orland Park around 12:43 a.m. Sept. 14, in a U-Haul truck.

Oakes was seen getting out of the U-Haul and stealing items from a car parked in a residential driveway.

A neighbor saw the incident and reported it to the Orland Park Police Department. The neighbor was able to provide video from a home security system, the county police officer said.

Oakes was remembered from an earlier encounter with Orland Park police for a domestic call. A U-Haul truck was seen parked at the Orland Park address, the sheriff’s police officer testified.

Police haven’t been able to locate Oakes, who is believed to have fled Illinois and may be in Colorado.

Oakes has prior convictions for possession of a controlled substance in 2013 and 2004. He was sentenced to three years’ probation for aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child. The probation was later revoked and Oakes was sentenced to 7.5 years in the Arizona Department of Corrections.

The judge issued a nationwide arrest warrant for $75,000.
