Man Threatened To Shoot Officers Before Gunshot At Oswego Home: Police

OSWEGO, IL — Oswego police say one person is in custody after an overnight domestic disturbance "escalated into an armed incident" including threats to officers and eventually a gunshot.

Early Friday afternoon, police offered more details on how the situation unfolded, saying Oswego police responded to a verbal domestic disturbance in the 500 block of Colchester Drive just before 1 a.m.

According to police, as officers helped a female resident safely retrieve her property and leave the home, a male resident "became erratic and verbally confrontational toward officers."

Officers cleared the scene but returned around 1:19 a.m. after the male resident called 911 requesting medical assistance, according to police.

Officers arrived to hear the male resident "yelling and screaming from inside the garage" while on the phone with dispatchers, according to police.

In a news release, Oswego officials said the male made threats to "harm and shoot officers," and police on the scene heard a gun discharge.

After a shelter-in-place order was issued and "several hours of negotiations," the male resident was taken into custody, police said

He was taken to a hospital for a psychological evaluation, according to police, who said charges are pending but have not been filed.

Police said officers "cleared and secured the subject's residence." As of 10:15 a.m., the shelter-in-place order had been lifted, although police said another shelter-in-place message was sent in error just before 10:45 a.m.

Oswego police notified residents of "an active scene" with a heavy police presence in the 500 block of Colchester Drive early Friday, saying a shelter-in-place order was issued.

Just before 7 a.m., police said the shelter-in-place radius had been reduced from one mile to one-quarter mile around the location.

Police said no District 308 schools were within the affected quarter-mile radius.
