What is Upper Cross Syndrome?

The Doctors at SportCo Rehabilitation teach you about upper cross syndrome.

What is Upper Cross Syndrome?

Upper-Crossed Syndrome is a prevalent problem today in the US and most developed countries where people use computers. In upper cross syndrome short (UCS) , tightness of the upper trapezius and levator scapula on the posterior side crosses with tightness of the pectoralis major and minor. Weakness of the deep cervical flexors in the front of the body crosses with weakness of the middle and lower trapezius. This pattern of imbalance creates joint dysfunction, particularly at the atlanto-occipital joint, C4-C5 segment, cervicothoracic joint, glenohumeral joint, and T4-T5 segment. Janda noted that these focal areas of stress within the spine correspond to transitional zones in which neighboring vertebrae change in morphology. Specific postural changes are seen in UCS, including forward head posture, increased cervical lordosis and thoracic kyphosis, elevated and protracted shoulders, and rotation or abduction and winging of the scapulae. What does this mean to the average person? This condition means pain in the upper back and neck, sometimes with decreased range of motion. I as a practicing chiropractor deal with patients with these issues most commonly in practice. Chiropractic adjustments can help! Chiropractic adjustments are a specific force into the joints to restore the lost motion, and inflammation caused from UCS. Doctors of chiropractic are specially trained in the evaluation and treatment of spinal conditions, which is why an increasing number of back pain sufferers are turning to them for fast, effective, and reliable care. Similarly, more and more hospitals and private practices are now working closely with doctors of chiropractic in order to ensure the best quality of care for patients who suffer from spine-related injuries and dysfunction.
