College Credits: SCUBA Certification Achieved By Oswego Student

Area students from Oswego are doing amazing things at colleges and universities across the United States.

SCUBA certification achieved by Oswego student

Gracie Benstine, an environmental studies and geography major of Oswego (60543), was one of 19 Augustana College students to recently complete their SCUBA certification.

Susan Wolf, Augustana's educational programs coordinator, said students trained for weeks and challenged themselves in completing the SCUBA training.

"They descended to depths of 40 feet while demonstrating specific skills, faced fears and braced against the dark, frigid waters of Haigh Quarry in Kankakee, Ill.," said Wolf.

She added many of the recently certified students will put their new skills to work during a January course, "Geology of the Caribbean." These students will dive in the topical waters and reefs of Bonaire, an island municipality of the Netherlands.

Oswego students earn scholarships from UW-Whitewater

The following local students are among the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater scholarship recipients receiving financial awards for the 2023-24 academic year.

  • 60543 Oswego, IL — Jarek Slavin, who is studying Physical Education, won the following scholarships: Ethan Andrew Barclay-Weberpal Service Scholarship; Lawrence "Red" and Carol Entress Family Scholarship
  • 60543 Oswego, IL — Maddie Wolcott, who is studying Entrepreneurship, won the following scholarship: College of Business and Economics Admissions Scholarship
