First Watch Looks To Take Over Former Giordano's Space In Oswego
Days after Giordano's shuttered in Oswego, the Plan Commission will consider an application from the breakfast restaurant for the space.

OSWEGO, IL — First Watch, a popular chain breakfast restaurant, is looking to take over the space that, less than two weeks ago, was a functioning Giordano's pizzeria.
The Planning and Zoning Commission is set to consider an application from First Watch at its Nov. 5 meeting. The village learned of Giordano's closure Oct. 26, Patch reported.
The restaurateur is requesting a major planned unit development amendment for charges to the exterior of the building at 2870 Route 34, which sits on about 1.3 acres. First Watch wants larger signage and to paint the existing natural brick, according to village documents.

The original final planned unit development for Giordano's only allowed signage on the front facade of the building, whereas First Watch is also asking to increase the signage on the side facade and include a painted wall sign, according to a staff report from Assistant Development Services Director Rachel Riemenschneider.

Although commissioners will ultimately decide whether to recommend approval of the changes to the Village Board, staff believe they are "out of compliance with the [Unified Development Ordinance]."
"While the design as presented may look attractive, this amendment as proposed by the applicant will allow future tenants to have a large amount of signage (particularly on the side facade) and to paint the exterior any color not considered 'garish or bright' without the review of the Planning & Zoning Commission or Village Board," Assistant Development Services Director Rachel Riemenschneider wrote in a staff report.
First Watch is known for its expansive rotating breakfast and lunch menus made with ingredients and flavors "inspired by the position of the sun," according to its website.
"A 'first watch' is a nautical term that refers to the very first shift of the day," the restaurant's website says of its name. "And if you ask us, it's the best shift of the day. That's because come the crack of dawn, we're slicing and juicing fresh fruit and vegetables and whipping up our French toast batter from scratch, just for you."
The restaurant group has surpassed 600 locations across more than 30 states. In Illinois, it operates 10 restaurants, with more on the horizon, including one set to open at The Boulevard Place in Joliet.
