District 308 Program Keeps Students Reading Through the Summer

The goal was to target students who may not have access to books and the library over the summer months

Plank Junior High School is on a mission to get kids reading this summer.

The National Junior Honor Society, multiple study hall volunteers, and staff members in conjunction with the building Literacy Specialist, sifted though all of the novels and non-fiction books no longer a part of the School District 308 curriculum, and developed a plan to get them in the hands of students.

Teachers and students were surveyed as to their interests, and bags of books were created for any students interested. The goal was to target students who may not have access to books and the library over the summer months, or those just interested in starting their summer with a personalized bag.

As a result of this project, over 194 books are being sent home based on student interest. As an incentive, students have the option of completing a questionnaire on each book to earn Pirate Points upon their return to school in the fall.

Additionally, individual bags of fiction and non-fiction books were given to each student currently in our Literature Dynamics program at Plank. These books are targeted to be of high interest and at the students' reading levels.
