Gas, Food/Drink Taxes Approved In Oswego

The board unanimously approved the taxes on Tuesday.

If you're filling up your tank or stopping to eat in Oswego, you'll soon pay more. Village trustees on Tuesday unanimously approved a 4-cent-per gallon tax on fuel sales as well as a 1 percent tax on food and beverages prepared for immediate consumption. The gas tax is anticipated to generate about $600,000 to fund road maintenance per year, while the prepared food and drink tax will net an estimated $500,000 per year for the village's operating budget.

The new taxes take effect on Oct. 1.

Some residents spoke up against the new taxes at Tuesday night's meeting, according to Kendall County Now, including one woman who complained of being "treated as an endless ATM ... for the whims of the village."
