Route 34 Now Open After Gas Line Break

Crews on the scene have fixed the break.

A gas line break that caused residents to smell natural gas and closed a portion of Route 34 has been fixed, according to the Oswego Police Department

The break caused the closure of Route 34 between Douglas Road and Fifth Street, but the road is now open.

Several businesses in the area had to shut down because of the break, but should be open now, police said.

Businesses that were affected include Chick-Fil-A, Starbucks, Bridgeview Bank and the Vitamin Shoppe, according to the Village of Oswego. The Meijer's gas station was shut down, also.

According to the Oswego Fire Protection District, crews were called out to the 2700 block of Route 34 at around 8:43 a.m. Thursday, March 24, for an odor of natural gas.

Nicor Gas Company dig crews were sent to the area, which contains a 4-inch gas line.

“Prevailing winds have caused the odor to drift southerly,” the OFPD said in a morning press release. “Subsequently, a number of additional calls have been received from neighborhoods to the south of U.S. Rt. 34, also for the smell of natural gas in the area. At this time, it is believed the only break is along U.S. Rt. 34.”
