Oswego East High School Students Advance To National Competition

Aryav Bothra and Avani Mathur were among nearly two dozen students who placed at the Business Professionals of America state competition.

OSWEGO, IL — Two Oswego East High School students captured first-places finishes at the recent Business Professionals of America competition and are among nearly two dozen students from the school who will compete at the national level, district officials announced Thursday.

Aryav Bothra and Avani Mathur took home top finishes at the competition, placing first in Basic Office and Procedures and ICD-10-CM Medical Diagnostic Coding, respectively at the state competition.

Business Professionals of America has a long tradition of working with students to prepare them for business careers through the advancement of leadership, academic and technological skills. The organization, which was originally started in 1966, supports business and information technology educators by providing co-curricular activities that are based on national standards.

The goal of the program is to provide all business students with the opportunity to demonstrate workplace skills learned through business education curriculum in the areas of finance, business administration, management information systems, digital communication & design, management, marketing & communication, and health administration, according to a news release.

In addition to the first-place finishers, the following Oswego East students placed at the state competition and qualified to compete at the national level. The Office Education program began at the high school six years ago with 40 students and has grown to more than 100 participants since it started.

“I am extremely proud of these students,” Sajder Adams, the BPA sponsor at Oswego East said. “During a normal school year, these students would meet several times during the semester to prepare. This year, students took ownership and studied predominantly on their own for their perspective competitions.”
