Oswego East Ranked Best District 308 High School, 113th In State

OSWEGO, IL — Oswego East High School was ranked the 113th top high school in Illinois and first among Community Unified School District 308 high schools by U.S. News and World Report.

This year's list of best high schools evaluated more than 17,800 schools nationwide, including 673 in Illinois.

The approximately 2,900-student high school has an Advanced Placement participation rate of 47 percent, with 34 percent of students passing at least one AP exam, according to U.S. News.

Mathematics proficiency is 41 percent, reading proficiency is 43 percent, and the school's graduation rate is 98 percent, which U.S. News classified as "well above state median."

Nationwide, Oswego East High School is ranked No. 2,955.

Within District 308, Oswego High School ranks 145th in Illinois and No. 3,964 nationwide.

The report is intended to show how well the nation’s public schools serve all students, regardless of achievement level, by teaching them basic skills and preparing them for college-level work, according to a news release from U.S. News.

The 2022 rankings used data from the 2019-20 school year, which was adjusted to compensate for the effects of COVID-19, according to U.S. News. Most schools closed before state testing in the spring of 2020, and federal education officials granted a waiver to skip testing that year, so U.S. News used assessment data from the prior three years.

The rankings aim to compare how well public schools prepare students for college-level work and teach students basic skills, according to the group.

In Illinois, the top five schools in the rankings were selective enrollment high schools in Chicago Public Schools, with the No. 6 school a selective enrollment suburban school — Proviso Math and Science Academy.

Among suburban public high schools that accept all residents, Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire was top-ranked, followed by Vernon Hills High School, Hinsdale Central High School, New Trier Township High School and Lake Forest High School.
