Oswego East Student Athlete of the Week

Jon Mohler has been playing baseball since around the same time he could walk.  The Oswego East senior, who head Coach Robert Kaminski describes as always being “in the right place at the right time”, is also a tireless worker in the classroom, which is why he is this week’s Oswego East Athlete of the Week.

Jon has been playing the sport of baseball since the age of 5, where he immediately fell in love with the sport.  Describing him as a selfless teammate is easy when he lists his goals as “being a good teammate and contributing in any way possible.”  Jon contributes to the team in a variety of ways, posting a .941% fielding percentage, as well as earning a 1.91 E.R.A. on the mount.  Offensively, Jon has accumulated a nearly .400 on base percentage, and a strikeout to walk ratio of nearly 9:1.  Being so versatile allowed coach Kaminski various options when filling out a lineup card each day.

As a senior, Jon has also accomplished a great deal in the classroom.  Over the past four years, Jon earned a 3.3 cumulative G.P.A., as well as earning a 27 on the ACT.  His favorite class is Advanced Team Sports, and takes a rigorous course load that includes AP Microeconomics.  His physical education teacher, Aaron Kimpton, lists Jon as a “hardworking student who, although quiet, is both well-liked and respected by his peers.”  Jon sees a future in sports management, to which Mr. Kimpton believes Jon would make an “excellent candidate based on his intelligence and love for sports.”

Coach Kaminski, who Jon describes as “passionate and serious about baseball, but does like to have fun sometimes”, sees Jon as a tremendous asset and leader for his program.  Despite falling short of a regional championship,  Jon was seen as a large part in that process, as he lead more by example than through words.  “Jon is not the most vocal athlete on the team, but there is no doubt that he leads by example”, says Kaminski.  He goes on to say “As coaches, we can rest assured that he will be in the right place, at the right time, and working hard regardless of who is watching.”

With the attitude and skills Jon possesses, his future remains very bright.  After having graduated this past Saturday, Jon will go on to attend Elmhurst College, with a focus in sports management and business.  Jon has seen how much school impacts him as an athlete, warning future Oswego East athletes that they “can’t play if they don’t prioritize school.”  We wish Jon the best of luck on his future at Elmhurst College.
