Oswego Man Fatally Struck Victim, Injured Another After Weed Deal Gone Bad: Cops

YORKVILLE, IL — A 21-year-old Oswego man is facing multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder after police say he intentionally hit two pedestrians with his vehicle following an illegal cannabis deal in a Yorkville parking lot.

Victor M. Hernandez Medina, 23, was pronounced dead at an area hospital on Sunday after he and a second pedestrian were struck by the vehicle, police said.

On Tuesday, Yorkville police announced the arrest of Jacob T. Lestina, 21, of Oswego, who now faces charges of murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery and failure to report an accident involving personal injury or death.

According to police, investigators determined that Hernandez Medina, the second victim and a third adult had arranged to meet Lestina in a parking lot in the 300 block of East Veterans Parkway for the cannabis transaction.

During the meeting, police said a "brief altercation" happened and Lestina drove away from the area. However, police obtained evidence showing that Lestina returned to the area and used his vehicle to hit Hernandez Medina and the second victim "on multiple attempts," officials said.

Police previously said the incident happened just before 5:15 p.m. Sunday.

Lestina then fled but was quickly found by Oswego police at a home and has remained in custody at the Kendall County Jail since, police said. A booking photo of Lestina was not immediately available on Tuesday night.

Yorkville police investigators investigators, in coordination with the Kendall vCounty State’s Attorney’s Office, secured charges against Lestina on Tuesday.

He is charged with:

• 3 counts of first-degree murder in connection with the death of Victor M. Hernandez Medina.
• 1 count of attempted first-degree murder (Class X felony) in connection with the injuries sustained by the second adult victim.
• 2 counts of failure to report an accident involving personal injury or death (Class 1 felony)
• 3 counts of aggravated battery (Class 3 felony).

A pretrial hearing is set for Wednesday in Kendall County.
