Oswego Man Shot by Police Identified

The 24 year old threatened a massacre and to shoot himself in the street.

The name of the man shot by Oswego police officers shortly after midnight Saturday has been released.

Taylor J. Cano, 24, of the 0-100 block of Ashlawn Avenue in Oswego, made several phone calls to the police indicating that a massacre was going to happen and that he was going to shoot himself in the street, according to a release from the Oswego Police Department. Cano called the police and then hung up several times. At one point, Cano said he had a rifle and would shoot anyone who came to help him.

When officers went to his residence, they found Cano outside his home with a rifle. Cano allegedly raised the rifle toward the officers. According to the release, the man did not comply with orders from the officers who, fearing for their safety, fired at him.

Cano was stuck in the the torso and police gave first aid to him. The Oswego Fire Protection District took him to an area hospital for further medical attention. He underwent surgery and is now in recovery.

The officers involved in the shooting, an 18-year veteran of the force and a nine-year veteran, were not injured, but did go to a hospital for an examination, the release said.

Cano is currently in police custody and is receiving medical care at a local hospital pending charges from the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office. A mugshot of Cano is not yet available. Police say Cano had recently moved to his residence on Ashlawn Avenue.

The Oswego Police Department is continuing to work with the Illinois State Police and will release information as it becomes available.
