Students To Play In Remote Concert, Unite Amid Global Pandemic

The Oswego School District is encouraging young musicians to play from their homes in show of solidarity.

OSWEGO, IL — The Oswego School District band directors are asking student musicians and their families to participate in a district-wide music performance on May 16, presenting a united front during the coronavirus pandemic.

Students are encouraged to go outside their home at 7 p.m., to an open space — front yard, back yard, balcony, porch — and play "Panem Nostrum," composed by Reena Esmail, the Los Angeles Master Chorale's 2020-2023 Swan Family Artist in Residence.

To participate, students and musicians are asked to download the sheet music and learn the melody, listen to the provided sample performance, use the drone recording as a background and perform the melody outside their home on May 16.

Participants are asked to share a photo or video of their performance on social media using the hashtag, #liftyourvoice.

The project was originally created by Nequa Valley High School instructor Greg Schwaegler in neighboring Naperville.
