Troubled Crazy Bull Bar Closes: Village of Oswego

Recent violence at the bar causes concern for village officials.

Less than a week after a reported shooting outside a Route 71 bar, the business has closed for good, the Village of Oswego said Thursday.

The owners of the Crazy Bull Bar & Saloon, 4092 Route 71, notified the village of the closing on Nov. 5, and voluntarily surrendered the bar’s liquor license, according to the village.

On Oct. 30, Oswego police responded to a report of shots fired at the bar.

Newly sworn-in Oswego Police Chief Jeff Burgner said police believe the shooting may have been gang related, and involved two groups of approximately three to four people each.

He said that altercation started as an argument between the two groups in the Crazy Bull parking lot. The altercation moved to the parking lot of the nearby Speedway gas station, according to Burgner, where witnesses reported that one person was battered by a member of the opposite group.

The person who was battered never came forward or filed a police report, Burgner said.

The fight then reportedly moved back to the Crazy Bull parking lot, where Burgner said multiple shots were fired.

While no one was injured in the shooting incident, a security guard at the bar received a deep laceration after being hit with a broken bottle while breaking up a large fight on Oct. 10, police said.

“We are always disappointed when a business in our community shuts their doors, but public safety is our highest priority for the Village of Oswego,” Village President Brian LeClercq said.

LeClerq earlier this week told Only Oswego that the problems at the bar were a “major concern.”

In a press release, the village said Oswego police will continue to investigate the recent incidents at the bar, regardless of the closing, adding there are “multiple cases under investigation at this time.”

Burgner said violent incidents at the bar have increased over the last six months. In May, he said a woman reported being punched in the face by a male patron as she was coming out of a bathroom at the bar.

Burgner said police are looking into whether the shooting is related to the Oct. 10 incident in which the security guard was injured.

“All these cases are still under investigation,” he said. “Sometimes cooperation from the witnesses isn’t always the greatest.”

The bar is located just down the street from District 308’s East View Kindergarten Center, as well as Oswego High School.
