Oswego HS Coach's Death: School District Issues Statement

26-year-old Amanda Stanton was found unresponsive Sunday afternoon in rural Oswego, the Kendall County Sheriff said.

OSWEGO, IL — Community Unit School District 308 officials have released a statement following news of the death of Oswego High School softball coach, 26-year-old Amanda Stanton. The school confirmed the woman killed Sunday in what Kendall County Sheriff's said was a hit-and-run crash in the southwest part of the county was the high school's coach.

In their statement, the district called Stanton a mentor and friend to many, whose "untimely and tragic death certainly has a large impact on the school community."

"Oswego Community Unit School District 308 expresses its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Amanda Stanton," the statement reads. "Amanda served as the head softball coach for the Oswego High School girls varsity softball team for the past three years. She was a motivational leader, instilling her athletes with confidence and positivity."

“Amanda was one of the best and brightest young women I have had the honor to work with and mentor; she had so much to offer and will be missed by all that were fortunate enough to know her,” said SD308 Athletic Director Darren Howard, in the statement. “Amanda’s work with the softball program had remarkable results.”

The district said they've arranged for counselors to be available for any students, coaches, or staff members needing support at this very difficult time.

Patch reported Monday morning the Kendall County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating Stanton's death, after she was found unresponsive in a roadway Sunday afternoon. Police said deputies responded to the area of Plainfield Road and Plainsman Court in unincorporated Oswego just before 2:30 p.m. Sunday to find Stanton, of the 100 block of East 11th Street in Lockport.

Investigators determined Stanton was dead, police said.

A preliminary investigation indicates that Stanton was the victim of a hit and run crash, police said late Sunday. Earlier in the day, police said Plainfield Road was closed between Southfield Lane and Plainsman Drive "due to an active investigation."

The sheriff's office said it expects to release additional information regarding the crash, officials said in a news release.

The sheriff's office said it was assisted in the investigation by the Kendall County Major Crimes Task Force, the Oswego Police Department, The Yorkville Police Department, The Plano Police Department, the Plainfield Police Department, the Illinois State Police, the Kendall County Criminal Intelligence Team, the Kendall County Auxiliary and the Kendall County Highway Department.
