Rescue Dog Saved from Backyard Sinkhole in Palatine
Local officials from the police, fire and public works department worked together to save the 17-year-old dog from the sinkhole.
PALATINE, IL - Local authorities helped to save a rescue dog from a sinkhole in a backyard in Palatine Tuesday morning.
The Palatine Police Department was called to the 700 block of East Glencoe Street at 6:22 a.m. on Tuesday where a homeowner said her 17-year-old rescue dog, Chance, had fallen into a sinkhole through a small opening in the grass in their backyard, according to a Palatine Police Department press release.
When officers arrived, they found Chance had become trapped in a much larger hole that had formed underneath the ground. Two officers, along with the homeowner’s 16 year-old son, got shovels and began immediate efforts to free the trapped dog. The Palatine Police Animal Warden ended up muzzling the frightened animal to allow for the digging to continue.
The Palatine Fire and Public Works Departments were also called to the scene to assist with the extrication efforts and help to make sure the hole did not cave in on Chance. Through their concerted efforts, Chance was freed from the sinkhole without suffering any injuries, police said.
The cause of the sinkhole has not yet been determined.
