PALATINE, IL — District 15 in Palatine replaced two playground structures at elementary schools in town over the summer months. The old playground equipment at Marion Jordan and Jan Addams elementary schools were not only aging but also not accessible to children with disabilities, according to D15 officials.

The new structures include ADA-compliant ramps for wheelchairs and swings for children of all abilities. The new Marion Jordan location also has a sensory wall for children with autism.

The school district has committed to replacing two playgrounds per year. This school year is the third year the school board has committed to replacing playground structures, with six replaced so far.

“District 15 feels play is not an extra, but an essential component of a student’s education. We plan to invest in two playgrounds each year to ensure all kids have a wonderful, inclusive experience playing outdoors at our schools,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Laurie Heinz.

The Marion Jordan playground project was enhanced with extra donations from the school’s PTA and private donors.
