Letter To The Editor: 5 Consensus Candidates 'Truly Represent The District 15 Community'
Palatine resident Amy Nelson explains why these school board candidates are "what we need to turn the page in our school district."

The following Patch Letter to the Editor was submitted by Palatine resident Amy Nelson.
I know the people who worked tirelessly to pull together a consensus slate of candidates for our D15 School Board. They brought in over a dozen people who expressed an interested in running, and worked with everyone in a transparent and democratic way to put forward the five best candidates to represent the community and unseat the three incumbent board members running for re-election. The individuals who took part in this process had no political agenda. In fact, the person who spearheaded the effort would not be considered partisan; they are just a concerned parent, like me, with a valid stake in the future of this community.
The five consensus candidates are not being presented as being from any specific political parties. They are from all different parts of the community, with different backgrounds and beliefs. But they are all united in their desire to restore both fiscal responsibility and collaboration with the community, and most importantly, trust in our school district, all to be accomplished through accountability. I’m supporting these five candidates (Frank Annerino, Mike Smolka, Anthony Wang, Lisa Szczupaj, and Barb Kain) because they truly represent the District 15 community. There are many organizations (yes, including political organizations) and community groups supporting them, as well as individual parents and taxpayers, all of whom know that things have to change.

I recommend the public get to know these candidates because they will quickly find that the Daily Herald has it wrong in not endorsing the other four candidates on this consensus slate (the Daily Herald did endorse one member of this group, Mike Smolka). These five candidates are what we need to turn the page in our school district, end the politics, and return the focus to doing what’s right for everyone in our community.
