Nearly $15M in Safety Upgrades for District 15 Schools Will Be Done This Summer
Improvements include a new roof for Hunting Ridge Elementary School and other projects designed to bring district buidlings up to date.

PALATINE, IL — As part of an effort to bring all of its buildings up to date, Community Consolidated School District 15 will be making nearly $15 million in safety improvements on about half of the system's schools this summer, according to the Daily Herald.
The upgrades will focus on school buildings on the district's north end and cost about $14.8 million, the report stated. The affected facilities will be closed while the work is being done, and summer school activities in those buildings will be moved to alternate locations during that time, the report added.
This summer's projects will finish the recommended building improvements highlighted in a state-performed, life-safety study of district facilities conducted in 2014, the report stated. Last summer, $14.1 million in state-mandated safety upgrades were done on buildings on the school system's south side, the report added.

Overall, the renovations will focus on shoring up the district's infrastructure, such as fixing roofs, replacing heating system, repairing plumbing and other basic, meat-and-potatoes improvements, Superintendent Scott Thompson told the Herald.
"None of it is very exciting, glamorous stuff," he said.

Improvements scheduled for this summer, according to the Herald, include:
- new exterior walls at Hunting Ridge Elementary School, Palatine, estimated at $1.9 million
- replacing the roof at John Conyers Learning Academy, Rolling Meadows, estimated at $2.1 million
- sidewalk replacement at Central Road Elementary School, Rolling Meadows, estimated at $700,000
Life-safety bonds will be used to fund the majority of the projects, but the district will still be on the hook for about $1.9 million for upgrades not covered by the bonds, such as Central Road's sidewalk improvements, according to the report.
