Nicasa at Forefront of Heroin Epidemic Response
Nicasa informs community members and offers treatment for heroin addiction.
69 people in Lake County died last year because of heroin and other opioids, including prescription pain medication. That’s more than in fatal car crashes. Law enforcement, social services organizations, legislators, and community members are coming together to address the rising heroin epidemic.
Nicasa is one of the top Lake County agencies leading efforts in responding to the heroin and opioid crisis. CEO Bruce Johnson has spoken at a number of community forums, panels, and meetings throughout the County about the extent of the heroin problem, recognizing heroin/opioid use in teens, and sharing resources for families who need help.
“Many people don’t realize that heroin addiction is just one step away from abuse of prescription pain medication,” said Bruce Johnson, CEO of Nicasa Behavioral Health Services. “A lot of times, people begin using prescription pain pills for legitimate reasons, get addicted, and turn to heroin - which is chemically, nearly the same. Families need to understand heroin use and know where to go if they need help.”

“It’s amazing to see parents’ responses to the display. They are shocked to learn how many things can be indicators of drug use,” said Johnson.
Nicasa is a founding member of the Lake County Opioid Initiative and works closely with local government officials to advocate for legislation, policies, and funding that will help curb the growing heroin epidemic.
