Police Address Weekend Presence Near Fatal Shooting Location In Palatine

Residents may have seen increased police activity in the area of Rand Road and Port's O'Call Drive on Saturday morning.

PALATINE, IL — While not officially connecting reports of increased police presence Saturday morning to a recent fatal shooting, the Palatine Police Department did address residents who may have been wondering why they had seen officers in the area of the incident.

"This activity involved only local and regional law enforcement resources," Palatine police said on social media. "There is no known threat to the public and no ongoing safety concerns related to this incident."

The Northern Illinois Police Alarm System was assisting Palatine police with Saturday's investigation.

Last week, Kevin K. Koonce, 20, of Streamwood, died from a gunshot wound to the head. According to police, officers responded to the 1200 block of East Prairie Brook Drive at around 9:39 p.m. Monday, March 16, following reports of a vehicle striking multiple parked cars and a garbage dumpster.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a black Audi four-door vehicle at the location. Police said the Koonce, who was found seated in the driver's seat, had sustained an apparent gunshot wound. The Palatine Fire Department arrived at the scene to provide medical assistance to the victim. He was taken to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Following the incident, North Rand Road was closed between Route 53 and Dundee Road until 10:10 a.m. March 17. Motorists had been encouraged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes while police process the scene.
