Property Tax Appeals open in Palatine Township

Board of Review property tax appeals for the 2022 tax year are open now through Noon on March 9th in Palatine Township and residents of the Township can contact the Palatine Township Assessor’s office or the Cook County Board of Review to file an appeal on their home.

“There are a number of ways you can file an appeal at our office,” said Bill Pohlman, Palatine Township Assessor. “We have forms in our office as well as outside our front door that you can fill out or you can send an email to appeals@palatinetownship-il.gov with your name, address, phone number, email address and, if you know it, your Property Index Number or PIN. If you have a more complicated appeal, you can call our office at 847-358-6164 and set up an appointment. You also have the option of going directly to the Cook County Board of Review web site and filing with them.”

Palatine Township is conducting a property tax seminar in conjunction with the Cook County Board of Review on Wednesday, February 22nd. The seminar will be held at the Township offices at 721 S. Quentin Road in Palatine starting at 6:00 PM. Representatives of both the Township and Board of Review will be in attendance to answer questions. Residents will be able to fill out a form during the seminar and file an appeal that evening.

Local taxing bodies determine the amount of a tax bill. The school district, village, library, township among others all request funds in what is called a levy for their annual budgets. Homes are assessed by size, construction and similarities to other homes in the community. In Cook County, homes are assessed every three years and the property tax is based on the results combined with the tax rate which is determined by the budget and levy of the taxing bodies.

“Values of residential and commercial property in Palatine Township increased since the last reassessment in 2019,” said Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi. “Real estate market trends saw home prices rise while rent collections have resumed since the early days of the pandemic.”

Palatine Township covers a six square mile area South of Lake Cook Road in Palatine, North of Central Avenue in Schaumburg, East of Huntington Boulevard in Hoffman Estates and West of Wilke Road in Arlington Heights.

The Palatine Township holds their monthly board meeting on the fourth Monday of the month at 7:00 PM at the Palatine Township offices on Quentin Road in Palatine.
