Schaumburg Man, 31, Killed in Kane County Crash

The crash occurred when the motorcyclist attempted to pass vehicles near Sugar Grove on Sunday evening.

KANE COUNTY, IL - A 31-year-old motorcyclist was killed after he attempted to pass vehicles in rural Kane County on Sunday evening and ended up colliding with another vehicle, police said Monday.

Pawel Czop of Schaumburg was initially taken to Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora following the crash on Jericho Road near the intersection of McCannon Road in unincorporated Sugar Grove Township at 6:40 p.m., according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office press release. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

An initial investigation revealed a 2010 Dodge Charger was traveling east on Jericho Road and had slowed to turn north onto McCannon Road. A vehicle following the Charger also slowed. Czop, who was driving a 2010 Honda motorcycle, was traveling east on Jericho Road behind the other vehicles.

For an unknown reason, police said Czot drove his motorcycle into the oncoming lanes of traffic and began to try to pass the vehicles. As the motorcycle traveled east in the oncoming lane of traffic, it struck the rear drivers side of the Dodge as it was turning. Czop, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle, according to the news release.

The driver of the Dodge, a 16-year-old Sandwich girl, and her father, who was the passenger in the vehicle, were transported to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora and were treated for minor injuries.

The vehicle that was stopped behind the Dodge was not struck in the crash and no one in that vehicle was injured.

Kane County Sheriff’s Detectives and members of the Kane County Crash Reconstruction Team are continuing to investigate this crash. Detectives have not yet determined if drugs, alcohol or excessive speed played a role in this crash and no citations have been issued, according to the news release.

Jericho Road was closed in the area for approximately four hours as the crash was investigated.
