Tools for Schools Event Gives Local Teachers Free Supplies

Greener Good, a 501c3 organization in the northwest suburbs, focused on providing secondhand materials for teachers and creators, is organizing it’s first Tools for Schools event. This event will provide teachers working in the Palatine and Wheeling township districts or private schools with free, new and secondhand supplies to support their students. Teachers work hard providing students with a meaningful and supportive learning environment. On average teachers spend $820 out of their own pockets, according to a survey completed by myelearningworld.com. New teachers in particular spend more to get their classroom libraries built up, to purchase storage bins and equipment they’ll use for years to come and for supplies some students may not be able to provide for themselves.

Through Greener Good’s popup creative reuse shop in Palatine, individuals and businesses have been excited to donate the type of materials that can be used in classrooms. Due to an overwhelming number of donations and educator interest, this event is now being organized at a larger location. Teachers will be able to select free supplies on July 29th from 10a-3p in the St. Thomas of Villanova gymnasium located at 1201 E Anderson Dr. Palatine, IL. Interested educators should pre-register for the event on the Greener Good website through July 27th to allow for volunteer planning and to expedite check-in at the event. First year teachers and teachers who volunteer for this event will be able to shop early on Friday, July 28th from 1-4p or Saturday, July 29th from 9a-10a.

Community members can support this special effort in three ways. The first way is to bring new and secondhand classroom, school, art, craft and office supplies and PreK-12 books in clean, still usable condition on July 23rd 1-4p, July 24th 10a-2p and July 25th 2-6p at the event location. Items can also be dropped off at State Representative Nabeela Syed’s office in Palatine, at Elderwerks in Palatine or at First Ascent Arlington Heights through Friday, July 21st. The second way to support this event is to please consider making a financial gift using @greenergood through Venmo or make donations through the Greener Good website. All funds will be used to provide Palatine and Wheeling township teachers with free supplies.
This event is about bringing the community together to get these supplies out to teachers. To make this happen we need to fill 350 volunteer hours from Sunday, July 23rd through Saturday, July 29th to help carry, sort and organize supplies.
