Transgender Girl Denied Unrestricted Locker Room Access By Court

A Cook County judge sided with District 211 on an injunction after a transgender girl requested unrestricted girls locker room access.

PALATINE, IL - A Palatine High School senior who requested an injunction against the Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 for not allowing her full access to the girls locker room at the school had that injunction denied by a Cook County judge on Thursday, the Daily Herald reports. Nova Maday filed a lawsuit against the district in late November that included claims that she has been regularly required to change for gym class in either a nurse's office or a locked private changing area and on one occasion had to retrieve her clothes from a loading dock.

She sought the injunction to nullify the district's requirement she use a private changing area that's located inside the girls locker room, according to the Daily Herald. Another injunction, one filed by the citizens group D211 Students and Parents for Privacy that's on the other side of the District 211 locker room access issue, was similarly denied earlier this month.

Both the American Civil Liberties Union, who is representing Maday, and Maday herself expressed disappointment in the most recent order while District 211 Superintendent Dan Cates praised it.

The Daily Herald reports that even though Maday is now just four months away from graduating, she may continue with the lawsuit after that if needed to help preserve full locker room access for other transgender students.
