Trial for Teen Accused of Father-Son Double Murder Begins

Palatine teen Marco Lopez goes by the nickname "Monster." It's a name that prosecutors will say is fitting as they try to prove the 19-year-old was responsible for the deaths of a father and son in 2014.

Lopez's murder trial begins Monday, Aug. 29, with jury selection. He's charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting deaths of Segundo Reynoso, 38, and Luis Reynoso, 15, in their Palatine apartment in March 2014.

As the proceedings get under way, here is some of the information surrounding the case that prosecutors and Lopez's defense will be trying to make a jury believe or refute:

• The Reynosos were found in their unit in the Baldwin Green Apartment complex in the 1900 block of Green Lane North. Luis died from multiple gunshots to the face, and his father was killed from a single shot to the head, the Daily Herald reported. There were no signs of a struggle at the scene, but neighbors told police they heard three to seven gunshots at the time.
• Lopez, who was 17 at the time of the murders, and Luis Reynoso were allegedly members of the same gang. The neighborhood where the Reynosos lived is reported to have a strong gang presence.
• After being kicked out of his home, Lopez was invited by Segundo Reynoso to stay with him and his son. That invitation was rescinded, however, after Segundo Reynoso began worrying that Lopez's presence was having a negative effect on the younger Reynoso, NBC 5 Chicago reported.
• Witnesses interviewed by police claimed Lopez was upset with Luis Reynoso because he suspected Luis had talked to authorities about burglaries Lopez allegedly was involved with, according to NBC 5 Chicago.
