- Marist marked the beginning of the season of Lent yesterday with Ash Wednesday services held during all religion classes. Lent provides us with a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our relationship with God and reminds of the great sacrifce Jesus Christ made for us. May this season offer you peace. You are in the prayers of the Marist community. We also hold in our prayers the 30 students and four teachers who are on a mission trip in New Orleans this week serving the "least favored".
- Marist hosted a career night event on Wednesday, February 20th. Over 300 students attended and were able to go to four brief presentations of their choice from a variety of professions.
Young people in different industries, many of them alums, shared their insight and experience.
They covered what classes and degrees are required, salary and benefits, day to day responsibilities, and the pros and cons of their job.
Presentors included: a business person, dentist, oncologist, engineer, firefighter, lawyer, nurse, occupational therapist, optometrist, pharmacist, physical therapist, police officer, social worker, speech pathologist.
- Marist welcomed Bishop Andrew Wypych, one of Cardinal George's auxiliary bishops and our vicar for Vicariate V, tomorrow, Wednesday, February 20th. Bishop Wypych celebrated the school's Christmas mass, and on this visit, he was able to spend time with students, tour the school, and drop in on a couple of religion classes.
- Marist's wrestling team advanced 10 wrestlers to the individual state finals, tying a school record. Facing the best the state has to offer, Marist did a phenominal job!
the wrestlers tied for the most state place winners in the 3A class, led by Senior Tom Howell (220lbs.), the 2013 state champion! Mark Duda '14 (113lbs.) finished an impressive second. In fact, Marist filled the podium, with Alex Benoit '14 (170lbs) in third, David Kasper '15 (126lbs) in fourth, Peter Andreotti '14 (160lbs) in fifith and senior Matt Sears (138lbs) in sixth.
Ethan Benoit '13, Nick Gasbarro '15, Jakada Hull '15 and Mario Leveille '14 also qualified and put forth tremendous effort!
Congratulations to the placers, coaches and the entire program!
- Marist's varsity cheerleading squad put out two virtually perfect routines at the IHSA state championship. In the end, they brought home the second place trophy. Congratulations to the team and coaches on another impressive season. It was tough competition in Bloomington, Ill., with Marist coming in second by just seven tenths of a point. Last year the team finished third, so the program continues to improve and make school history!
- Marist's chess team had an amazing trip to the state tournament last weekend! After a strong finish in conference and regionals, the group tooks its talents down to Peoria. While the team finished 3-4 overall, it provided great experience in the tournament and team building.
Junior Joe Fennessy was on fire, finishing 7-0 individually. This record gave him a second place finish in the state! (Although undefeated, there are scoring factors that determine final place finishes.)
Congrats to Joe, the team and Coach Bob Morowczynski on a great season! Can't wait until next year!
