Moraine Valley Focuses on Health During Earth Month

Focusing on sustainability doesn't mean thinking just about the environment, but also a person's well-being.

Focusing on sustainability doesn’t mean thinking just about the environment, but also a person’s well-being. Healthy You, Healthy Planet is the theme for this year’s Earth Month celebration at Moraine Valley Community College. All activities are free and located on campus, 9000 W. College Pkwy in Palos Hills.

“Plastics and You” will explore the implications of plastic on the human body and the environment and how to reduce the risk. This presentation is Wednesday, April 11, 2:30 p.m., in the Student Union, room U111.

On Saturday, April 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., people can drop off unwanted electronics, batteries and other e-waste for recycling as well as unwanted medication for proper disposal. Shark Shredding also will shred and safely recycle personal documents from 10:30 a.m. to noon (limit two boxes per person). The collection and shredding will take place in the Building T parking lot.

Watch the movie “Living Downstream,” which follows Sandra Steingraber, ecologist and cancer survivor, as she travels across North America to break the silence about cancer and its environmental links. The video will be shown Tuesday, April 17, 9:30 a.m., and Wednesday, April 18, 10 a.m., in Building B, room B119.

Amnesty International’s Iran Specialist, Elise Auerbach, will discuss the current state of human rights in Iran on Thursday, April 19, at 12:30 p.m., in the Library.

“A Conversation About Being Beautiful: Cosmetics for Men and Women” will take place Monday, April 23, at noon, in the Library. Learn more about the chemicals in personal care products, the environmental implications and associated health risks.

In observance of Arbor Day (April 27), take a tree walk around campus on Tuesday, April 24. An arborist from the Morton Arboretum will guide participants around the tree-filled campus, which has been named Tree Campus USA. Tours start from the clock tower at Building S at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m.
