Moraine Valley Golf Team Finishes 12th at Nationals, Frederick named All-American

Moraine Valley's golf team hit the links at nationals last month, finishing in 12th place with a golfer named an All-American player.

The Moraine Valley Community College golf team has been out of the spotlight throughout the winter, but they made some noise this spring. After a stellar fall that saw the Cyclones earn the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference championship and a second place finish in the NJCAA Region IV tournament, the squad successfully returned from a trip to the national competition in Plymouth, Indiana.

Moraine Valley competed as a team for the second time in the college’s history at nationals, May 22-25, at Swan Lake Resort. The team tied for 12th in a competitive event—their best finish yet, said coach Bob Freudenthal. Even with golfer Jeremy Fraser (Lincoln-Way North) unable to compete on the last day because of an injury, the team still finished well. All-Conference player Ryan Frederick (Lockport) placed 13th among 128 golfers in the country and became an All-American and All-Tournament player.

The course was not easy, but the Cyclones played well. Frederick finished with a 77, 75, 78 and 70; Brendan Ryan (Shepard) hit 77, 76, 79, 73, and missed being an All-American by one shot; Kenny Feldmeier (Providence) shot 76, 85, 77, and 76; John Beissman (Lockport) shot an 87, 85, 86, and 86; while Fraser ended with a 78, 82 and 78 for the tournament.

“I’m very proud of Frederick, and the whole bunch. This was the best finish we’ve had at nationals, and the first time we’ve ever had an All-American golfer at Moraine Valley,” Freudenthal said. “Frederick is a heck of a golfer. Overall, it was satisfying to see how well we did. This is without a doubt the best golf team in Moraine Valley’s history.”
