Class Forming For Moraine Valley’s Fall Vet Assistant Course

PALOS HILLS, IL -- Attention animal lovers. Moraine Valley Community College will be offering its popular introductory veterinary assistant pre-professional program. The one-semester, non-credit course is accepting students for the fall program, which starts Aug. 21 on MVCC's main campus in Palos Hills. Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 9:45 p.m.

Students 18 and over with a high school diploma or GED are eligible to apply. The course includes more than 90 hours of classroom instruction and 60 hours of observational experience working in a clinical setting. Students who’ve completed the course have had a 60-percent job placement rate for students enrolled.

The class is appropriate for anyone with the following interests or career goals, in including those working toward become a vet technician or veterinarian, groomers, pet sitters, dog walkers, animal therapy workers and caregivers, pet foster parents, and employees at boarding and training facilities, shetlers, pet stores or rescue groups. Topics covered in the course include:

• Medical terminology
• Animal behavior and handling
• Medication administration
• Preventative care
• Laboratory safety
• Radiology procedures
• Surgical prep, monitoring and recovery
• Aseptic practices to help prevent spread of disease

Students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion, which could be used to satisfy some entrance requirements in more advanced veterinary career programs. The course is in the beginning stages of applying for NAVTA approval.
