For all the unexpected surprises in golf, the Moraine Valley Community College team trusts they have a talented squad, and the golfers are eager to start the season.

Moraine Valley golf alumnus and Head Coach Matt Lovelace returns for his 11th season leading the program. Always optimistic, he knows the unexpected nature of the game and the unknowns that opponents often bring to each match. But he also knows he has a talented team ready to get on the links.

“It’s always fun when it’s golf season. I’m looking forward to getting back out there with the guys. We should be good, we just have to work on the short game, which is easier to learn,” Lovelace said. “We’ll just practice, practice, practice.”

Because young and inexperienced golfers tend to focus on driving the ball as far as possible, many are less skilled at the short game, which Lovelace hopes to focus on this season. He expects the returners to be solid, which includes Fionn Gormley (Tinley Park), Anderson Miz (Stagg), Dominick Rallo (Hinsdale South) and Tayler Schade (Oak Forest). The sophomores have been working on their game all summer, and some took lessons with a Cyclone alumnus at Cog Hill.

“Those guys know what to expect and should come out with more confidence,” Lovelace noted. “I’m looking for good play from them.”

Among the new golfers is Zechariah Davila (Argo), a strong golfer and the brother of a Cyclone golfing alumnus; James Hull (Lincoln-Way East), a confident player; and Jack Schussler (Tinley Park), who has a long drive.

The Cyclones compete in conference matches in the fall with additional tournaments, including regionals, taking place in the spring. The team opens its season on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at ThunderHawk Golf Club.
