Cyclone golfers ready to hit the links

Competition is underway for the Cyclones who are looking to make some gains on their toughest opponents this season.

Teams within the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference, such as Waubonsee Community College, pose a threat to the Cyclones every year. But some of those teams have had enough players transfer and graduate while Moraine Valley has bolstered its crew to become a threat of their own.

Last season with a mostly new team and new coach, the Cyclones improved every tournament, sending one (Alec Martinez) to nationals. In 2017, Coach Matt Lovelace has one season under his belt and knows what to expect from the good to the bad. His three returners will help lead the way: Mitchell Crook (Richards), Nick Regan (Lincoln-Way East) and Reid Rimsnider (Lockport). Regan and Rimsnider each have a chance to step up and be the No. 1 golfer on the team.

The newcomers include James Goich (Lincoln-Way East), Thomas Rodriguez (Peotone), Michael Stanton (Brother Rice), and Cyclone tennis player Eric Niewinski (Oak Forest), who’s new to organized golf.

A man of few words, Coach Lovelace is feeling good about this Cyclone golf season. “We have solid returners as well as some golfers who played high school golf successfully and should do well this fall,” Lovelace said. “I’m confident we have a good team and can win conference. I’m excited about this year.”
