Golf is a funny game full of ebbs and flows. The Moraine Valley Community College men’s golf team experienced that a number of times this season, finishing a respectable year in the NJCAA Region IV tournament.
After starting the regional competition, Oct. 11-12, on a strong foot, including a 78 shot by John Yerkes (Marist)—his best all season—the Cyclones slipped. The greens were much faster and had more breaks than Moraine Valley was accustomed to, and they struggled to adjust. The talent was there, but they skidded at the wrong time for a ninth place finish, said coach Bob Freudenthal.
Jeff Cizek (Sandburg) led the way with 82, 87 and 85 followed by Sandburg alum Joe Knight (83, 87, 84), Shepard product Pat Neylon (84, 94, 84), Lincoln-Way North grad Jack Misheck (88, 92, 86), and Yerkes (78, 94, 98).

“Almost all our guys ran into problems at the worst time of the season, but we didn’t finish last which is good. I warned them of the faster greens, but they had trouble adjusting. Of all the factors, that was number one in our performance. It is what it is,” Freudenthal said.
Although the season didn’t end how they wanted, there were several highlights in 2013. The Cyclones finished second in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference and three golfers were named to the All-Conference team: Knight, Misheck and Neylon.
