Fake COVID-19 Water Inspector Attempts Ruse Burglary: Reports

Similar incidents of man posing as a water inspector checking for COVID-19 have been reported in Oak Lawn, Worth, Burbank and Palos Hills.

PALOS HILLS, IL — Another sighting of a fake COVID-19 water inspector who distracts elderly homeowners and then steals property from their homes popped up in Palos Hills last Friday, reports said.

Around 5 p.m. June 19, police were called to a home in the 9700 block of South 81st Avenue for a possible ruse burglary. The homeowner told police that a man described as Hispanic came to the door and said he needed to check water for COVID-19.

Police said the man was able to distract the homeowner and left with a pillow case. It’s unknown what, if anything, was taken from the residence, or if there was an accomplice.

Over the past month, surrounding towns have had similar incidents where a man driving a gray Buick knocks on the door of a senior citizen’s residence. The offender claims to be from the “water department” and says he needs to inspect the water supply or spray for COVID-19. The man tells the homeowners to go to different rooms while he checks other areas of the house, according to area crime alerts. Police said the man steals items from the house, particularly the bedrooms.

Incidents involving the COVID-19 ruse burglary scam have also been reported in Oak Lawn, Burbank and Worth. The Chicago Ridge Police Department said in a Facebook post that the suspect has been identified and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
