Fisherman Arrested After IDNR Officer Finds Big Bag of Heroin and Oxycontin: Prosecutor

IDNR officer had asked to see fisherman's license when drugs were found, prosecutor said.

PALOS TOWNSHIP, IL -- A Chicago man fishing in a Palos Township forest preserve lake was arrested April 17 after IDNR police found Oxycontin and heroin in his belongings, prosecutors said.

Adam Jurveis, 40, appeared before Cook County Judge Donald Havis on a charge of possession with intent to deliver. He also has an outstanding civil attachment body warrant out of Marshall County, IL.

The prosecutor said an officer from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources approached Jurveis, who was fishing at 95th Street and Wolf Road in Palos Township. The officer asked to see Jurveis’ fishing license. When the officer ran a check on Jurveis, he found an outstanding warrant for Jurveis' arrest in Marshall County.

After the officer took Jurveis into custody, he conducted a search where he found 36 Oxycontin pills and a plastic bag containing ten smaller baggies of suspect heroin. The officer also found smaller quantities of other drugs, the prosecutor said.

Jurveis’ attorney told the judge that his client is an unemployed Teamster waiting for work. Aside from the heroin, the attorney said Juveis has a valid prescription for Oxycontin.

“I know this isn’t the venue to try the case,” the attorney said. “The body warrant is for failure to pay taxes. It’s a civil contempt case.”

Jurveis was released on a $10,000 I-bond. His next court hearing is set for May 10 in Bridgeview.
