‘Grandchild Phone Scam’ Swindles Senior Out of $13,000

Caller told senior their grandson was in jail and needed money to bond out, Palos Hills police report said.

PALOS HILLS, IL -- Palos Hills police spoke with a resident who reported receiving a call around 8 p.m. May 22, stating that their grandson was in jail and needed money to bail out of jail, reports said. The resident wired the caller $8,000. Later that day the caller received another $5,000 so that the “grandson” wouldn’t have to wait in jail or the next court date. As it turned out, the grandson was not in jail and the calls were fake, police said.
