The condo building was apparently evacuated, according to a resident who commented on NextDoor, who said she was woken up around 9 p.m. by Palos Hills police banging on her door.

“They said that everyone had to evacuate because there was a ... grenade outside- it was about 45 minutes before it was safely taken away and we were allowed back inside our home. We’re living in a country where anything could happen.”

An inert grenade isn’t necessarily illegal to own, depending on the location at which it was found. According to the U.S. Marine Corps, inert grenades are a safe training tool because they are hollowed out and do not explode. They mimic a live grenade's explosion by producing a small, audible pop from a timed fuse. This process reinforces the time constraints associated with live-grenades before actually employing the lethal look-a-like.
