A Palos Hills man faces charges after he barricaded himself, his girlfriend’s mother and two small children inside their Palos Hills home on Friday afternoon.

Steven J. Bates, 46, was charged with two counts of battery, assault, and resisting a police officer, all of which are misdemeanors, Palos Hills police said in a release.

Police were called for a domestic battery incident in the 10500 block of Roberts Road around 2:40 p.m. Friday. A woman at the scene told officers her intoxicated boyfriend had repeatedly punched her hands when she refused to give him the car keys, according to police.

The officers knocked on the door and Bates shouted profanity from inside, police said. He refused to open the door and threatened to shoot the officers through the door.

The mother told officers that Bates had piled furniture in front of the door to keep the officers out, and that he would not let her leave, according to the statement. Officers opened the door, and Bates attacked one of them, hitting him in the face and breaking his glasses. He was taken to the ground and arrested, police said. The mother and the two small children were not harmed in the incident.
