WORTH, IL -- A Worth man charged with misdemeanor battery is facing a felony charge after he destroyed a mattress in the Worth Police Department jail, prosecutors said. William Roberts, 33, appeared before Cook County Judge Terry Gallagher on a charge of criminal damage to government property. Roberts appeared in court wearing a bandage on his head.

According to the charges, Roberts was arrested for battery and resisting police on March 30 after a fight at a Worth bar. When he was taken to the Worth police station, the prosecutor said Roberts allegedly began hurling the mattress around the cell until it fell apart in pieces. Police said Roberts also clogged the toilet. The total damage was around $500.

The prosecutor said that Roberts has seven prior misdemeanor arrests, his last convicting in 2012 for drug paraphernalia. A public safety assessment recommended that Roberts be put on electronic monitoring. His bail was set at $10,000. Roberts is due back in court April 15 in Bridgeview.
