Man Dies Of Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound Near Stagg: Police

Palos Hills man is believed to have shot himself when confronted by police, causing evacuation of Stagg-Oak Lawn football game, cops say.

PALOS HILLS, IL — A 46-year-old man died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound when confronted by officers investigating a shots-fired call that prompted the evacuation of the Stagg High School football stadium, Palos Hills police said in a statement.

The man was identified as Tomas Razukas by the Cook County Medical Examiner.

Around 8:16 p.m., officers went to the 7900 block of W. 111th Place, about a block from Stagg High School. Preliminary reports indicated that a man was threatening suicide. Officers found a man, later identified as Razukas, in the 11200 block of Moraine Drive, armed with a handgun, police said.

As described by Palos Hills police, “a short time later there was an officer involved shooting,” and police said Razukas took his own life. He was pronounced dead on the scene from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The medical examiner has not yet announced a cause and manner of death.

A “Code Red” alert was issued to keep residents informed. The Stagg-Oak Lawn high school football game was underway and the teams, coaches and spectators were moved inside the school building.

“This took organization and coordination to accomplish, and the Stagg High School staff should be applauded for their efforts,” police said.

Another message was sent to the community, when the scene was secure and there was no longer a threat or danger to the public.

The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force was called to investigate the incident, which is ongoing.
