Man Slugs Cop Resisting Arrest In Bowling Alley Fight: Police

Judge takes man into custody after removing I-bond. "We can't have people fighting with police and knocking them to the ground."

PALOS HILLS, IL — A Chicago Ridge man resisted arrest after he disobeyed orders to stop beating two other people at a Palos Hills bowling alley, police said. Andrew Kernats, 57, was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, resisting arrest and criminal damage to property.

Palos Hills police responded to a report of a fight around 5:30 p.m. Feb. 15 at Palos Lanes, 11025 Southwest Highway. According to reports, Kernats hit two people at the bowling alley. When Kernats disobeyed orders to stop fighting, police said Kernats slugged the officer and pulled him to the floor, ripping the pocket on the officer's outer vest cover.

The people on the receiving end of Kernats’ alleged punches did not wish to press charges. Kernats was charged for hitting the cop, reports said. Kernats appeared in court for a bond hearing on Feb. 16.

Kernats had been free on a $25,000 I-bond set earlier by a judge at the Leighton Criminal Courts Building. He was taken into custody at the Bridgeview Courthouse after Cook County Judge John Mahoney set a cash bond of $30,000.

"We can't have people fighting with police and knocking them to the ground," Mahoney said.
