McGraw-Hill profiles NGSS at Shepard, District 218

Textbook publisher to profile D218 at National Science Teachers Association convention next month.

Last spring, textbook publisher McGraw-Hill approached D218 Curriculum Director for Science Dr. Carol Baker about profiling how District 218 has integrated Next Generation Science Standards into its curriculum.

And no wonder: Baker was among a handful of educators chosen to write the new teaching and learning standards a couple of years ago.

McGraw-Hill will use the videos as resources for educators across the nation looking for ideas on how to integrate NGSS into classrooms.

  • A film crew from McGraw Hills spent a few days at Richards, Shepard, and Eisenhower high schools interviewing Baker and many teachers; the crew also spent quite a bit of time in labs recording students at work.
  • These videos will serve as resources for educators across the nation on how to integrate NGSS into curriculum. The publisher will debut these at the National Science Teachers Association convention next month.
  • Most of the videos appear in pairs. Baker provides an introduction to the topic, and a teacher outlines a lesson illustrating a lesson related to the topic. Many of the lesson videos include students at work in labs.
  • Elizabeth Melville, the director of Product Management and Professional Development for McGraw-Hill, wrote Carol that “the clips turned out very well and wish we could have spent longer than one class period in some of these classes to truly see the impact of NGSS on teaching and learning. Your teachers clearly are doing things differently and we are inspired the opportunity that NGSS allows.”

Essentially, NGSS seeks to get students to think like scientists and engineers. Every video listed here looks and sounds incredible. They’re short, so it won’t take long to get impressed.
