An essay written by Palos South eighth grader Omar Ragab earned him the opportunity to serve as city attorney for a day for the City of Palos Heights in October.

His essay was selected by the Palos Heights Woman’s Club as part of its annual Mayor for a Day essay contest.

In addition to serving as city attorney, Mr. Ragab also took part in a mock city council meeting with the other contest winners that was broadcast on Palos Heights Public Television Chanel 4 on October 19. He also received a plaque and certificate for his winning essay and was treated to a pizza dinner at Lake Katherine Nature Center and Botanic Gardens with the other winners.

Mr. Ragab said that he was glad he was able to serve as city attorney for the day since he plans to study for a career as an attorney when he heads off to college.

Palos Height’s Woman’s Club Vice President Rose Zubik said that the organization first established the annual essay contest 42 years ago to get area students thinking about taking part in local government and public service.
