Palos Park Police Offering Rides Home To New Year's Partiers

Too many cocktails? Palos Park police are offering rides home to New Year's revelers -- even the chief -- no questions ask.

PALOS PARK, IL -- If you’re planning on knocking back a few while ringing in the New Year, Palos Park police want you to get home safe. Anyone who is unable to drive and doesn't have a ride home can call the Palos Park Police Department at 708-448-2191 and an officer will pick you up and take you home -- no questions asked. Even Chief Joe Miller is giving out his personal cell phone number, 708-259-1035, and will be driving home late-night revelers.

"The concept is to encourage impaired persons to take advantage of it," Miller said in a news release. "If someone is impaired and needs a ride, we would much rather have them call us than get behind the wheel and get into an accident."

Officers will only drive impaired persons home, not to another party or bar. The service is available to anyone calling from a bar, restaurant or home within Palos Park village limits. And if you do decide to get behind the wheel after a night of partying, the Palos Park Police Department’s holiday DUI patrols will be out in force through the early morning hours of Jan. 2.

The best advice is to have a plan for getting home before you head out New Year's Eve. Getting a DUI or into a bad accident is a terrible way to start a new year.
