The serious work of Shepard High School physics teacher Brian Sievers often takes his classes into the scientific fun house. Sievers always seems involved in some unexpected, unconventional project.
In this case, it's demonstrating projectile motion by launching potatoes across the softball field at Shepard.
This work, as evidenced by the video, carries great meaning for all of us. The United States for years has faced a shortage of students pursuing careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) areas.
Many students declare majors in STEM areas only to change their course of study once they realize the work involved in completing the degree. Experiences like this one help students understand the reward that comes with all that hard work.
Teachers who get students involved -- who allow them to do and not just listen, take notes, and talk -- generate excitement in a subject. It's easy to see.
