Register Now for Moraine Valley's Veterinary Assistant Program

Do you love animals? Moraine Valley's newly accredited pre-professional veterinary assistant course starts Jan. 27.

PALOS HILLS, IL — Moraine Valley Community College’s newly accredited veterinary program is now enrolling students for a Jan. 27 start. The National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) teaches the appropriate job skills and knowledge needed for veterinary assistants to succeed.

Veterinary assistants are an integral part of the veterinary team supporting a veterinarian with surgeries, monitoring animals, giving medication, talking with pet owners, and more. This non-credit pre-professional program can be completed in six months, and participants receive a certificate of completion. Upon completion, students also will be eligible to sit for NAVTA’s exam through which they could earn the organization’s approved veterinary assistant designation.

Topics covered in the Veterinary Assistant Pre-Professional Program include: medical terminology; animal behavior and handling; medication administration; preventative care; laboratory safety; radiology procedures; surgical prep, monitoring and recovery and aseptic practices to help prevent spread of disease.

The college’s program includes more than 150 hours of classroom instruction on topics like medical terminology, animal behavior and handling, surgical assisting, laboratory safety and procedures, diagnostic imaging and more. Students also participate in 100 hours working in a clinical setting to get ready for a new career.

This class is scheduled to begin Monday, Jan. 27 and meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 to 10 p.m. in Building C, Room C167. The program runs through July 22. The cost is $2,499. Registration is required; the course code is VT4-101-200.
