Roofing Scammers Targeting Elderly Homeowners: Police

Palos Park police say scam artists are targeting the elderly convincing them need a new roof.

PALOS PARK, IL -- Palos Park police are investigating several reports of scam artists targeting elderly homeowners by convincing they they need to get roof repairs. The scam artists either call or come to door after obtaining elderly homeowners’ info off the Internet.

The phone scammers are reportedly very aggressive telling people they are in the area and coming by to inspect their roof. Scammers use such lines as, “We have looked at your roof and you need a roof repair.” “You must do it right away,” or “we did the roof repairs on your house for the previous owner.” Police said the con artists also prey on elderly homeowners’ memory by telling them they did their roof repairs years ago and need to inspect how the work is holding up.

Residents are encouraged to speak to multiple roofing contractors before hiring one. They should also keep close tabs on the condition of their roof and doing preventative maintenance.
